Dinner at Gaijin Japanese Fusion
We enjoyed an awesome dinner at Gaijin Japanese Fusion restaurant in South Yarra on a Monday night, a restaurant that brings big flavors, innovative fusion combos, welcoming spice and excellent texture to dishes. Gaijin is also known for great value and service over many years. We have visited several times since our first visit in 2014 and have been highly impressed.
Volcano Salad.
We experienced some of Gaijin's signature dishes -
Sushi Platter featuring 4 of their hit sushi dishes - Melbournian Roll, Tasmanian Roll, Crunchy Spicy Salmon Special, Dragon v Tiger
Volcano Salad (Mixed Kani crab stick, seaweed salad, salmon, tempura crunch, tobiko, Gaijin special mayo),
Cheesy Gyoza (comfort food central),
Gyu Tataki (delicate touch of class with Eye fillet seared rare with watercress, ponzu, pickled red onion, fried shallots),
Miso Soup (decent sized),
Karaage
The Sushi Platter was top notch, showcasing some of their signature sushi dishes. Gaijin appears on some “best sushi in Melbourne” lists.
My favorite sushi dish was the Crunchy Spicy Salmon Special featuring Spicy salmon and tempura crunch topped with fresh salmon and Gaijin special mayo. So much to lotasty salmon, spice and crunch; a party in the mouth.
Although it was also hard to go past the Dragon v Tiger Roll of Unagi, avocado, cucumber topped with torched salmon and teriyaki sauce. Great blend of flavors and textures.
The Melbournian Roll is an all time favourite featuring Crab salad, cream cheese topped with torched spicy salmon, tempura crunch, masago, Gaijin special mayo, teriyaki sauce. The cream cheese element is next level.
Volcano salad was tasty and refreshing featuring fresh salmon and came with excellent spice and crunch.
Gyu Tataki was a touch of class with thin strips of seared eye fillet in a compelling sauce.
Cheesy Gyoza was a comforting cheesy dumpling style dish.
Karaage was perfectly cooked, served with dipping sauce.
Another great experience at Gaijin with the restaurant almost full on a Monday night. Also check out their “all you can eat” deal as well as their new brunch offering on weekends (see my previous post).
