Brunswick and Brunswick East are two of Melbourne's greatest eating suburbs - and two of its most wallet-friendly. Sydney Road is a multicultural food corridor unlike anywhere else in the city: a Lebanese bakery that Anthony Bourdain visited on his Melbourne food tour, an Israeli falafel institution born from a farmers market food truck, Mexican birria tacos drawing queues from across the city, and a South American cafe where live music plays on the weekend. Brunswick East adds craft breweries, Polish dumplings, and the East Brunswick Village precinct to the mix.

I've spent years eating my way across both suburbs and this is my personally loved guide to the best cheap eats in Brunswick and Brunswick East in 2026.

Brunswick

Sydney Road and surrounds — Melbourne's greatest multicultural food strip

1. A1 Bakery — The Lebanese Heart of Brunswick Since 1992

Best for: Manoush, Lebanese pies, morning pastries, Middle Eastern groceries  |  Price range: $4–$15  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.75/5

A1Bakery SSchultz creation

A1 Bakery has been the Lebanese heart of Brunswick since Elias and Nadia Raji Farah, along with Nouha and Chafic Choueiri, opened its doors on Sydney Road in 1992. Over three decades later, their son Haikal manages a venue that has grown from a modest Lebanese bakery into one of Melbourne's most beloved food institutions — visited by Anthony Bourdain on his Melbourne food tour, expanded to three Melbourne franchises, and somehow still feeling like the neighbourhood bakery it started as.

The za'atar manoush — flatbread covered in a mixed herb spread of thyme, oregano, sumac and sesame seeds in olive oil — is the essential order and one of Melbourne's great cheap eating experiences at a few dollars a piece. The cheese pie (halloumi in filo), the spinach pie, the sujuk pizza and the shanklish pastry are all must-tries. The Chicken Tawouk Wrap — toasted with pickled cucumbers, turnips, lettuce and garlic paste — is a lunch staple that sets the benchmark for Lebanese wraps on Sydney Road. The Kibbie Platter is a broader exploration worth ordering for the table, and don't leave without grabbing an ice-cold Ayran from the fridge.

Pastries are priced under $10 across the board. The flatbread was so popular by 1997 that A1 had to open a dedicated manufacturing plant. Everything is made fresh daily. There is no more reliably excellent cheap eating on Sydney Road than A1, and at these prices, returning daily is not an unreasonable life choice.

TWLM Verdict

A Melbourne institution and one of the greatest cheap eating experiences in the city. Anthony Bourdain knew. Three decades of loyal locals know. The za'atar manoush at A1 is one of the most satisfying $5 you will spend on food in Australia. A non-negotiable Brunswick stop.

643-645 Sydney Rd, Brunswick. Open daily 7am–5pm.

2. Tawooq — Melbourne's Lebanese Street Food Obsession

Best for: Shawarma wraps, quick lunch, serious flavour at street food prices  |  Price range: $12–$20  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.75/5

tawooq2

Melbourne's Lebanese street food obsession has found its Brunswick East home and the queues outside tell the whole story before you even taste a bite. The shawarmas here are the real thing — meat rotating on a spit, seasoned properly, sliced to order and packed into fresh Lebanese flatbread with garlic sauce, pickles and fresh vegetables. This is not a shawarma approximation. This is the genuine article.

The Tawooq wrap — grilled marinated chicken in Lebanese bread — is a straight-up flavour bomb. Take the first bite and you immediately understand why people travel across Melbourne for it. The chicken shawarma is equally exceptional. Everything is generous, made with care, and priced at exactly what street food should cost. Tawooq is doing what the best Lebanese street food venues do: taking simple things and executing them perfectly.

TWLM Verdict

Straight-up flavour bombs at street food prices. Melbourne's Lebanese street food obsession is completely deserved — the shawarmas and Tawooq wraps are among the best value eating experiences in the inner north. Join the queue. It moves fast and it's worth every second.

3. Very Good Falafel — Sydney Road's Israeli Falafel Institution

Best for: Falafel pita, vegan and vegetarian eating, Sydney Road lunch  |  Price range: $12–$18  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.7/5

The name is the greatest understatement in Melbourne food. Very Good Falafel started at the farmers market, where Louisa Allan and Shuki Rosenboim ground Mallee-grown chickpeas twice daily, loaded them into their "falafel gun" sent from Rosenboim's family in Israel, and fried them fresh for market crowds. The demand was undeniable enough to earn them a permanent home at 627-629 Sydney Road in 2016, and it has been a Sydney Road institution ever since.

The falafel itself has the crispy exterior and yielding, herb-green interior that marks the best of Israeli falafel craft. Served in a freshly baked pita with pickles, tahini, hummus and a daily rotating selection of salads — artichoke and rocket, carrots and pomegranate, pumpkin, spinach and tulum cheese — it's a complete experience at a remarkably accessible price. Almost the entire menu is vegan, making Very Good Falafel one of the most naturally inclusive cheap eats on Sydney Road. The house-made limonada, pressed to order from fresh lemon juice and mint, is the drink to order alongside.

TWLM Verdict

The best falafel in Melbourne — and the name barely does it justice. Twice-daily ground Mallee chickpeas, fresh pita, rotating seasonal salads and limonada made to order. Very Good Falafel is one of Sydney Road's greatest contributions to Melbourne's food culture. Go early — the salads sell out.

627-629 Sydney Rd, Brunswick. Mon–Fri 11am–8:30pm, Sat 11am–5pm.

4. Tom Phat — Southeast Asian Fusion, Sydney Rd Since 2004

Best for: Southeast Asian dinner, cocktails, the roti omelette  |  Price range: $18–$32  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.7/5

Tom Phat has been doing Southeast Asian fusion on Sydney Road since 2004 and its staying power is not a mystery. In a city where restaurants come and go with unsettling speed, Tom Phat has outlasted trends, new openings, and the relentless churn of Brunswick's dining scene by doing one thing exceptionally well: serving genuine, flavour-forward Southeast Asian food in a warm, cosy space that feels instantly welcoming. It's rated #4 of 186 Brunswick restaurants on TripAdvisor and among Melbourne's best Thai restaurants year after year.

The signature wok-tossed roti omelette — with bacon, chives and roasted tomato salsa — is Sydney Road's most satisfying breakfast/brunch fusion dish. Uncle Ho's Breakfast, a grilled marinated pork chop with crispy-fried egg, tomato, cucumber and rice, is another brilliant alternative to the traditional fry-up. The dinner menu leans Thai, with all pastes and sauces made in-house, and the share-everything format works beautifully with the punchy cocktail list. A cosy interior with recycled timber, bonsais and Buddha figures creates exactly the right mood for a long, relaxed dinner.

TWLM Verdict

Twenty-plus years on Sydney Road and still one of Brunswick's best tables. The roti omelette alone justifies a visit. All sauces and pastes made in-house, MSG-free, and a cocktail list that rewards. Tom Phat is a Sydney Road institution that earns every year of its reputation.

184 Sydney Rd, Brunswick. Tue–Sat from 5pm, Sun from 5pm.

5. Nerudas — South American Cafe & Bar, Brunswick

Best for: South American brunch, live music weekends, empanadas  |  Price range: $14–$26  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.7/5

nerudas cafe

Named after the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, this Brunswick cafe and bar on Breese Street brings the warmth, colour and flavour of South America to the inner north with a genuine heart. It's a modest, intimate space that has built its loyal following through consistently good food, remarkably friendly staff, and a Saturday and Sunday live music program that transforms the room into something approaching a cultural celebration.

The empanadas are the must-order — both the mushroom and cheese and the beef mince with pine nuts are excellent, with that short, flaky pastry shell that defines a good South American empanada. Arepas, ceviche and Pastel de Choclo (a sweet corn pie with a beef filling) are other highlights from a menu that ranges across Chilean, Colombian, Peruvian and Brazilian influences. The Completo hot dog — piled with tomatoes, avocado and mayo in the Chilean tradition — is a casual street food favourite worth trying. Voted one of Australia's best South American restaurants and the welcome you receive on arrival confirms why.

TWLM Verdict

A flightless trip to Latin America, and one of Brunswick's warmest dining experiences. Live music on weekends, empanadas that transport, and staff who welcome you like a regular from the first visit. Nerudas is a Brunswick gem that rewards anyone who finds it.

66 Breese St, Brunswick. Wed–Sun from breakfast/brunch. Live music Fri & Sat nights.

6. TBBQ — Texas BBQ Melbourne, Brunswick

Best for: Smoked meats, groups, sharing platters, BBQ lovers  |  Price range: $20–$45 per person (platters)  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.6/5

TBBQ 05240

TBBQ brings the genuine philosophy of Texas BBQ to Brunswick — and does it with conviction, craft, and funky leather booths that set the mood before you've even ordered. Texas BBQ is a slow art: low-and-slow smoking that runs for 12 hours or more, building bark and smoke ring and depth of flavour that cannot be rushed or faked. TBBQ doesn't cut corners and you taste the difference in every mouthful.

The signature platters are the way to go. Each meat receives its own unique dry rub — formulated specifically for that cut. The smoked Black Angus arrived with a proper bark and smoke ring that Texas pitmasters would approve of: yielding without being mushy, deeply flavoured throughout. The smoked Wagyu is the premium option and the fat marbling, treated with that low-and-slow method, produces something extraordinary. The smoked meaty Pork Ribs — with a caramelised rub crust and smoke flavour that lingers well after the meal — are the dish that converts the uninitiated into regulars. You'll be thinking about these on the drive home.

TWLM Verdict

Genuine Texas BBQ craft in Brunswick. The unique dry rubs, the proper smoke ring, the leather booths — TBBQ delivers an authentic American BBQ experience at prices that make it exceptional value for the quality on the platter. A must for smoked meat lovers.

7. Bellboy Cafe — Creative Brunch, Brunswick

Best for: Weekend brunch, prawn and crab roll, Za'atar chicken  |  Price range: $18–$28  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.6/5

bellboy cafe feast

Bellboy Cafe pushes the Brunswick brunch menu further than the eggs-and-toast template and rewards curious diners with dishes that surprise in the best possible way. We've visited multiple times and each visit has delivered something genuinely memorable. The avocado smash toast here is a properly composed dish — not a checklist item. The grilled Za'atar chicken is a standout: Middle Eastern herbs blooming on the grill, the chicken juicy, the whole thing landing with aromatic confidence. The chilli scrambled eggs are executed with real technique — heat integrated throughout, not an afterthought drizzled on top.

On another visit, the prawn and crab roll was an unexpected revelation — generously filled, impeccably dressed, the kind of dish that makes you immediately plan a return. Bellboy is a cafe with genuine kitchen ambition and the execution to back it up.

TWLM Verdict

A Brunswick cafe that consistently punches above its weight. The Za'atar chicken, chilli scramble, and prawn and crab roll are all outstanding. Bellboy rewards every visit with something new to love. One of the inner north's best brunch experiences.

8. Wide Open Road — Specialty Coffee & Brunch, Brunswick

Best for: Melbourne's best specialty coffee, brunch, weekend morning ritual  |  Price range: $16–$26 food, $5–$8 coffee  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.7/5

Wide Open Road is one of Melbourne's most respected specialty coffee roasters and cafes — a Brunswick institution that has shaped how the city thinks about sourcing, roasting and serving coffee. This is not a venue where coffee is an afterthought. Every cup here is a considered product: single origins sourced with obsessive care, roasted in-house to bring out complexity rather than mask it, brewed with precision by baristas who understand what they're working with.

The food program matches the coffee's seriousness — a brunch and lunch menu built on quality ingredients and clean, confident execution. Wide Open Road is the kind of cafe that other cafes aspire to be, and at brunch prices it represents outstanding value for the quality of the entire experience. If you love great coffee, this is a Brunswick pilgrimage worth making.

TWLM Verdict

One of Melbourne's most respected specialty coffee destinations. Wide Open Road sets the standard for what a Brunswick cafe can be — exceptional coffee, solid food, and the kind of considered approach that makes it a pilgrimage for serious coffee lovers. A Brunswick institution.

Brunswick East

East Brunswick Village and surrounds — Melbourne's most exciting new dining precinct

9. CDMX — Mexico City Taqueria, Brunswick East

Best for: Birria tacos, al pastor, tequila and mezcal, groups  |  Price range: $5–$8 per taco, $16–$28 for a full meal  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.8/5

CDMX BirriaTacos

CDMX — the abbreviation for Ciudad de México — is one of Melbourne's most exciting restaurant openings in recent years, and the Brunswick East location is its definitive incarnation. Run by Beatrice Nacor and Daniel Pineda, the husband-and-wife team behind Seddon's Superchido, the 65-seat taqueria on Lygon Street is designed to feel exactly like a Mexico City taqueria: metal chairs and tables, white and blue tiled walls, cobalt blue painted brick, and a big blue neon sign that glows beautifully through the front window.

The birria tacos made CDMX famous and they remain non-negotiable. Braised beef brisket in corn tortillas with melted cheese, coriander, onion and salsa — served with a pot of birria consomme (rich beef broth) for dipping between bites. These are ridiculously good. But CDMX is no one-hit wonder. The al pastor — marinated spit-roasted pork with pineapple, the quintessential Mexico City taco — is equally outstanding. The campechano (slow-cooked beef and house-made pork sausage) and papa taco (crisp potato with cheese, salsa and chipotle mayo) are essential supporting acts. The elote — chargrilled corn with chipotle mayo, spices and Mexican anejo cheese — is the starter that tables fight over. A long bar pours classic cocktails, frozen margaritas and an impressive tequila and mezcal selection. CDMX is a Melbourne taco destination that sits comfortably among the city's very best.

TWLM Verdict

One of Melbourne's best Mexican restaurants by some distance. The birria tacos are iconic, the al pastor is essential, and the tequila and mezcal bar is exactly the right accompaniment. CDMX Brunswick East is a genuine destination venue that delivers on every visit.

10. Eat Pierogi Make Love — Polish Dumplings, Brunswick East

Best for: Polish dumplings, curious diners, groups wanting something different  |  Price range: $14–$24  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.8/5

eat pierogi2

Polish cuisine doesn't get nearly enough attention in Melbourne's dining conversation, and Eat Pierogi Make Love is doing its level best to fix that — one dumpling at a time. The name says it all: this is a restaurant with a singular, passionate love for pierogi and an infectious enthusiasm for sharing that love with everyone who walks through the door. We loved it immediately.

The pierogi themselves are hand-made pockets of dough with a range of fillings: the classic Ruskie (potato and cheese) is the essential order, the sauerkraut and mushroom filling is deeply umami, and the meat versions are satisfying and well-seasoned throughout. Order them pan-fried — the golden, slightly crisp exterior giving way to the yielding filling inside is what converts visitors into regulars. We loved every plate and were planning a return before we'd finished the last dumpling. At these prices, returning often is very easy to justify.

TWLM Verdict

A fantastic Polish restaurant with genuine heart and outstanding dumplings. Eat Pierogi Make Love brings Melbourne's Polish food culture a permanent home it deserves. The pan-fried pierogi are magnificent — the Ruskie and sauerkraut and mushroom fillings in particular. Go hungry. Leave happy. Return soon.

11. Charrd — Brunswick

Best for: Charcoal-grilled food, casual dinner, neighbourhood favourite  |  Price range: $18–$32  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.8/5

Charrd brings the flavour and technique of charcoal cooking to Brunswick and does it with real conviction. The charcoal imparts a depth of flavour — that subtle smoke and char that you simply cannot replicate on a conventional grill — and the kitchen uses it across the menu to excellent effect. This is the kind of cooking where the method is as much a part of the flavour as the ingredient, and Charrd understands that relationship well.

The result is a casual neighbourhood restaurant that consistently over-delivers. Charrd has quickly built the kind of regular following that takes years to develop, because the food gives diners a genuine reason to come back. At these prices, it sits at the compelling end of Brunswick's mid-range dining options.

TWLM Verdict

Charcoal cooking done with real craft in Brunswick. Charrd has earned its loyal following quickly and deservedly — the smoky depth from that charcoal grill makes every dish more interesting. One of Brunswick's rising stars.

12. Juanita Peaches — Brunswick's Iconic Double Cheeseburger

Best for: Melbourne's best double cheeseburger, casual dinner  |  Price range: $16–$26  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.8/5

Burger at Juanita Peaches

Juanita Peaches is one of the best burger joints in Melbourne and the Double Cheeseburger is iconic. We devoured 240 grams of patty goodness and it was everything a great smash burger should be: two patties with proper caramelised crust from the smash, double American cheese melted perfectly, soft bun with the right sauce-to-filling ratio, pickles providing the acidic counterbalance. This is a burger engineered for maximum satisfaction and it delivers every time.

Juanita Peaches occupies that very particular Brunswick lane: irreverent, unpretentious, completely casual — but secretly obsessed with doing the fundamentals correctly. At this price point the Double Cheeseburger is one of the best value eating experiences in the suburb. If you love burgers, this is non-negotiable.

TWLM Verdict

One of the best burger joints in Melbourne. 240g of patty goodness with proper smash crust and double cheese — the Juanita Peaches Double Cheeseburger is genuinely iconic. Go hungry. Order the Double. Thank us later.

13. Bird Brunswick — 24-Hour Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Best for: Fried chicken feasts, groups, the Feed Me menu  |  Price range: $18–$38 (Feed Me menu)  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.7/5

bird brunswick

Bird Brunswick takes buttermilk fried chicken seriously and that 24-hour marinade is the detail that makes all the difference. Marinating chicken in buttermilk for a full day isn't a marketing line — it's a technique that produces genuinely tender, deeply flavoured meat with a crust that has the crunch and colour you're after. Bird understands that great fried chicken is craft, not convenience.

The Feed Me menu is the definitive way to experience Bird and it is a proper feast. Cornbread arrives warm and slightly sweet. The mac and cheese croquettes are dangerously moreish — creamy interior, crisp shell, impossible to stop at one. Every wing flavour follows, then southern fried tenders and thighs that showcase exactly what a day in buttermilk does. Crispy french fries, creamy slaw and every dipping sauce complete a table that groans under the weight of it all. It is unambiguously excellent.

TWLM Verdict

One of Melbourne's best fried chicken experiences. The 24-hour buttermilk marinade is the real thing and the Feed Me menu — wings, tenders, thighs, cornbread, mac and cheese croquettes, fries, slaw, every sauce — is an extraordinary group dining proposition. Bird Brunswick earns every recommendation.

14. Rocky Ridge BrewHouse — 30 Taps, Brunswick East

Best for: Craft beer lovers, groups, Friday afternoon sessions  |  Price range: $12–$28 food, $10–$14 pints  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.7/5

rocky ridge3

Rocky Ridge BrewHouse is a serious craft beer destination in Brunswick East — thirty taps pouring a rotating selection that rewards every visit with something new. The Pilsener Side Pour is a session beer of genuine lager precision: clean, crisp, exactly what you want when the sun is still up. The Jindong Juicy Ale delivers the tropical, hazy hop character that defines the style done right. The Ace IPA has the bitterness backbone and citrus complexity that IPA fans demand. Working through the tap list here is a genuine pleasure.

The food program from the team at Camx is excellent and holds its own completely alongside the beer — a menu designed to work with what's in your glass. Rocky Ridge is one of Brunswick East's most exciting venues and a craft beer lover's dream in the inner north.

TWLM Verdict

Thirty taps, exceptional food, and beer curation that makes every visit rewarding. The Pilsener Side Pour and Ace IPA are the ones to start with. Rocky Ridge BrewHouse is a craft beer lover's dream in Brunswick East.

15. The Rocket Society — Middle Eastern All-Day Bar, East Brunswick Village

Best for: All-day drop-ins, Lebanese flatbread lunch, pre-cinema mezze  |  Price range: $14–$28  |  Rating: ★★★★★ 4.75/5

therocketsociety 05323

Named after the 2012 film about the 1960s Lebanese space program, The Rocket Society sits alongside the much-loved Rumi restaurant in East Brunswick Village — and together they anchor one of Melbourne's most exciting new dining precincts. Created by chef Joseph Abboud and his wife Nat, it's an all-day bar built for the neighbourhood: Lebanese flatbread sandwiches for lunch, snacks in the afternoon, larger mezze in the evening.

The drinks program is thoughtful — a rotating wine list focused on the Cradle of Civilisation, beer and wine on tap, and the brilliant Margarocket cocktail. Drop in before a movie at FOMO cinema or after a session at Bridge Road Brewery and The Rocket Society fits perfectly into any part of the day. With about 20 seats inside and 20 outside on Bluestone Way, it's intimate, warm, and exactly what East Brunswick Village needed.

TWLM Verdict

A creative, joyful all-day bar from one of Melbourne's most respected culinary families. Don't miss the Margarocket. Read our full feature.
