Straddling the Murray River on the Victoria–New South Wales border,  Echuca Moama is one of the most satisfying slow tracel close-to-home weekend escapes from Melbourne that doesn't feel compromised. Ancient river red gums line the banks, paddlesteamers churn slowly past historic wharves, and a genuinely excellent food and wine scene has quietly grown up alongside it all.

We spent a sunny weekend escape here recently - and came back wondering why we'd waited so long. The river is calming. The town moves at its own pace. And the eating and drinking, it turns out, is seriously good.

Distance from Melbourne ~200km · approx 2.5 hours via Hume Freeway & Northern Highway
Best For Paddlesteamers, river culture, wine country, craft distilleries, historic port, relaxed dining

Why Echuca Moama?

echuca the social bar fire

Just 200 kilometres north of Melbourne - around 2.5 hours via the Hume and Northern Highway - Echuca Moama is where Australia’s greatest river stories meet one of its most exciting regional food and wine scenes. The name Echuca comes from the Yorta Yorta word meaning “meeting of the waters,” and nowhere is that more fitting.

Here, Victoria meets New South Wales, the mighty Murray River meets the Campaspe, and one of Australia’s richest colonial histories meets a vibrant modern country lifestyle. In the 19th century, the Port of Echuca was the largest inland port in Australia. At its peak, more than 200 paddle steamers travelled the Murray-Darling river system from here, carrying wool, wheat and supplies to a young nation before roads and railways connected the country.

Today, that remarkable heritage isn’t locked away in museums - it’s alive. Historic paddle steamers still cruise the Murray, the original wharf remains one of Australia’s most significant heritage sites, and beautifully preserved Victorian buildings line High Street, now home to boutique shops, galleries, cafés and welcoming pubs. This is heritage that moves - paddlesteamers, a working port, and a living and breathing exciting river culture.

What impressed us, however, was just how dynamic Echuca Moama has become.Beyond the history lies one of regional Victoria’s most exciting culinary destinations. We discovered an innovative craft distillery producing spirits worthy of Melbourne’s best bars, a riverside wine bar that instantly became one of our favourite places to unwind, a bustling brunch café with inner-city quality, and a restaurant turning out handmade pasta and wood-fired pizzas that would be celebrated in any capital city. That’s what makes Echuca Moama such a compelling destination.

The Murray River brings a sense of calm and timeless beauty, while the towns themselves buzz with outstanding hospitality, arts, culture and a food and drink scene that continues to exceed expectations.

Whether you’re cruising aboard a century-old paddle steamer, enjoying a long lunch overlooking the river, exploring wineries and distilleries, browsing local galleries or simply soaking up the atmosphere of Australia’s most iconic river town, Echuca Moama offers the perfect balance of heritage, relaxation and contemporary country living. Also, whilst we drove there, Echuca Moama is easily accessible by train.

Where to Stay — CocknBull Boutique Hotel

We stayed at the CocknBull Boutique Hotel and it set the tone for the entire weekend - this is elite regional accommodation. The suite was genuinely large and beautifully appointed; an Illy coffee machine on arrival, an excellent shower, and the kind of bed linen that tells you immediately that someone has thought carefully about every detail.

But what elevated CocknBull beyond just a very good hotel room was the setting. A sensational courtyard, beautifully kept gardens, a pool positioned right by the river, and river-facing rooms that put you as close to the Murray as you can be without being on it. At dawn, with the mist off the water and the river red gums catching the early light, it was genuinely spectacular.

cocknbull bedroom

Our host was quite simply amazing. She knew everything about the region and delivered the kind of warm, knowledgeable hospitality that makes a stay memorable rather than merely comfortable. If you're visiting Echuca Moama, base yourself here.

Style Elite boutique heritage hotel
Standout Features River-facing rooms, pool by the Murray, sensational courtyard, Illy coffee machine, exceptional host
Location Central Echuca — walking distance to the Port, restaurants and bars
Verdict The best place to stay in Echuca Moama. Premium accommodation that genuinely surprises.

Saturday — Port, Paddlesteamers & the High Street

Johnny & Lyle's — The Brunch Café Echuca Deserves

johnny and lyles brunch

Start the weekend at Johnny & Lyle's, which made an immediate impression - this is a seriously good café. Large, elongated, buzzing with locals who clearly know they're onto something - it's the place to be in Echuca on a Saturday morning. The owner and staff are engaging and genuinely warm, and the room has real energy without feeling chaotic.

We ordered the Chilli Scrambled Eggs — a generous serving with a proper chilli hit, the kind of spice that wakes you up in the best way, served with a refreshing Vietnamese-style salad and a very generous amount of egg on toast. The Brekky Burger is another standout. Long blacks and flat whites were excellent. Service was fantastic throughout. This café would hold its own in any Melbourne suburb.

Order: Chilli Scrambled Eggs, Brekky Burger, Long Black. Arrive before 10am on weekends — it fills fast and the locals know it.

The High Street — Rich Glen, Arbory & Echuca Chocolate Company

echuca cocolate company

After brunch, walk the High Street on your way down to the Port. The main strip is one of the best-preserved Victorian-era streetscapes in regional Victoria, and the independent businesses that populate it are worth more than a cursory glance. Stop at Rich Glen Olive Estate for premium Murray region olive oils; Arbory for thoughtfully curated homewares and gifts; and the Echuca Chocolate Company - where, if you're anything like us, you'll leave with considerably more than intended.

Port of Echuca — The Wharf to Winery Paddlesteamer Tour

wharf to wine canberra paddlesteamer

This is the centrepiece of any Echuca Moama weekend and it exceeded every expectation. Collect your tickets at the booking office on the river, walk a short distance to the paddlesteamer docks, and step aboard the PS Canberra — built in Goolwa in 1913 and still magnificently, stubbornly alive.

wharf to wine murray river

Standing on the deck of a vessel this old, on the Murray, in winter sunshine, is one of those travel experiences that puts you genuinely in contact with history.

wharf to wine morrisons

The commentary aboard was outstanding - informative, warm, and genuinely makes history come alive rather than recite it. We learned about the flood level markers on the bridge wall (the height the Murray has reached is almost impossible to believe - standing there, you simply cannot picture that much water), about the trees along the bank that only grow in flood plains, and about All the Rivers Run - the 1983 film based on Pearl Wallace's life, which was partly filmed along this very stretch of river. We happen to know the Wallace family, which added an unexpected personal dimension to the whole experience.

morrisons beef cheek

The tour concludes with wine tastings and lunch at Morrisons Winery - a fifth-generation property where kookaburras apparently consider themselves permanent staff.

wharf to wine kookaburras

The service was excellent, the value outstanding, and the food genuinely impressive for a lunch that comes as part of a tour package.

What We Ate Fried chicken, kingfish, beef cheek (melt-in-mouth, ordered twice)
What We Drank Morrisons Shiraz (excellent), Chardonnay
The Vessel PS Canberra — built Goolwa 1913, still operating on the Murray
Duration 3 hours including paddlesteamer cruise and winery lunch
Verdict Great value. Don't visit Echuca Moama without doing this.
Booking tip: Order your entrée, main and glass of wine in advance when you book — the lunch component at Morrisons is pre-ordered. The tour sells out; book well ahead at portofechuca.org.au.

Social Wine Bar — We Were Blown Away

echuca the social bar

We had expectations for Social Wine Bar. It surpassed all of them. This little wine bar sits on the banks of the Campaspe River - not the Murray, which makes it slightly tucked away and all the more special for it - and in winter, with a fire going, birdlife in the trees, and the light dropping over the water, it is one of the most peaceful and unique spots we've encountered anywhere in regional Victoria.

We settled in by the fire in the courtyard, ordered a glass of Harvest Moon Pinot Grigio, and basically didn't want to leave. This is the OG wine bar of Echuca - the original, the one that established the template - and it still does what it does better than anywhere else in town. We were already well wined and dined from the paddlesteamer tour and knew dinner was coming, so we restrained ourselves from the food menu. Mistake. We'll correct that next visit.

Editor's Pick — Social Wine Bar

By the fire, in a courtyard, on the Campaspe River, at sunset. With good wine and birdlife. In winter. This is the kind of place that reminds you why you leave the city.

Sunago — Classic Modern Greek on the High Street

sunago parthenon platter

Sunago on the High Street was Saturday night dinner and delivered a confident, well-executed modern Greek menu that had us immediately at ease. We were keen for a mix of meats and seafood - and for the dips, which are essential in this kind of setting - so we went straight for The Parthenon, the signature meat and seafood platter for two. It's a showstopper. The kind of dish that arrives and immediately resets the table's conversation.

sunago interior

The Rockbare 2022 Shiraz was a solid match - decent wine, sensibly priced. The service was warm and attentive without crowding you. Sunago occupies a comfortable space on the Echuca dining spectrum: not the most ambitious restaurant in town, but one of the most enjoyable - exactly what you want on a Saturday night after a day on the river.

Bar Lee / Echuca Distillery — An Absolute Gem

echuca distillery

We ended Saturday at Bar Lee, attached to the Echuca Distillery, and it was the revelation of the trip. This place is an absolute gem - "mad scientists" in control with such a massive range of products, but it's eclectic and it works. They're producing gin, vodka, whisky, agave tequila and cocktails, with more funky variations than we could count. More flights than Tullamarine, as we joked on the night.

echuca bar lee indian gin flight

We went on a journey here - and we mean that literally. The staff take you through the range with genuine enthusiasm and knowledge. We tried a whisky-tequila combination spirit that was genuinely amazing - the kind of thing you'd never think to order and immediately want to buy a bottle of. And then came the Indian Gin Flight, which was the highlight of the night.

As well as a fabulous Hibiscus Gin to savour.

Also tried: Philadelphia Hibiscus Rose Gin — elite

If you love places where you can go on a proper journey through flavour and craft, Bar Lee is your place. We love places like this. Do not skip it.

Sunday — Wine Country, Art & a Farewell Dinner

Essen — One of the Best Brunch Dishes in a Long Time

essen brunch

Essen is 450 metres from CocknBull and sets you up for the day perfectly. Large, open, airy, with engaging staff and a La Marzocco machine that immediately signals this is a café that takes coffee seriously. We ordered the Shakshuka with bacon - a generous, sensational dish with a side of bacon that was one of the best brunch dishes we've had in a long time. The omelette - fluffy, not too salty, herbed beautifully - was the other standout. Long black and flat white both excellent. Essen also doubles as a bar, with a back courtyard worth exploring.

Order: Shakshuka with bacon (generous side, sensational), omelette, long black. La Marzocco machine — coffee is excellent.

The Foundry Arts Space — Browse the Gallery

echuca foundry artspace display

Back in the Port precinct, the Foundry Arts Space is a genuinely impressive regional gallery housed in a converted industrial building. Opens at 10am. Rotating exhibitions from regional and national artists, quality craft and design, and a space that takes its programming seriously. Worth 45 minutes and a good way to re-engage with the Port precinct before afternoon tastings.

St Anne's Winery — Cellar Door in the Port Precinct

st annes tasting

St Anne's Winery operates a cellar door right within the Port of Echuca precinct - a characterful heritage setting that makes the tasting feel appropriately rooted in the town's history. Their Murray Valley wines cover the full range; the setting is relaxed and unhurried. We hadn't factored in the incredible fortified collection - that caused us to linger a little longer. Staff here are super engaging and we were impressed by the quality of wines (loved the Pinot Noir). A good way to spend an hour before the final dinner of the weekend.

High Street — Final Browse

echuca shops sweet

The High Street retains its late-afternoon character well. If you didn't get through everything on Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon is the time to loop back through the independent boutiques and any shops you flagged but didn't enter. Echuca's retail is genuinely better than most regional towns of its size.

Embr — Sunday Dinner and the Best Meal of the Weekend

embr gamberi pizza vibe

Embr was Sunday dinner and it was, frankly, outstanding — the best meal of the weekend and one that would land comfortably in Melbourne's competitive dining scene. The room is gorgeous: attractive booths, high ceilings, moody lighting, a working pizza oven, and a neon sign that gives the whole space just enough edge. Front of house was led by Anthony, whose service was elite — warm, knowledgeable, and present at exactly the right moments. We met the head chef, too — someone clearly running a very tight ship.

embr carbonara mixed

Everything here is house-made: 48-hour fermented pizza dough, extruded pasta made on-site daily. That commitment shows in every dish. The Gamberi pizza with king prawns was elite — beautifully balanced, the prawns plump and sweet against the char of the wood oven. The Carbonara Classica was the standout of the night: spaghetti, guanciale, Lucerne pasture-raised egg yolk, pecorino romano, pepper. Creamy, rich, and precise — the egg yolk was extraordinary.

embr tiramisu

DishNotes
Gamberi Pizza — king prawns Elite. Wood oven, 48hr fermented dough.
Carbonara Classica Spaghetti, guanciale, Lucerne egg yolk, pecorino, pepper. Elite.
Limoncello Tiramisu House made. A proper finish.
Gin Melon Sorbetti House gin from Eureka Distillery, specially made for Embr.
Nero d'Avola Heathcote Flynn's Sangiovese — excellent pairing
House Gin Cocktail House gin w finger lime, Pearl Italia, lime juice, Gazzosa — exceptional

Editor's Pick — Embr

The best restaurant in Echuca and a genuine destination in its own right. Everything house-made, elite front of house, a room that gets the atmosphere exactly right. Book ahead — it fills faster than a town this size has any right to produce.

Cape Horn Vineyard — A Murray River Gem

cape horn vineyard

Cape Horn Vineyard is one of those places that rewards the drive out of town. Set on the Murray River floodplain about 15km from Echuca, it occupies a stretch of riverbank that feels genuinely remote — ancient river red gums, the Murray winding past, birdlife in the trees, and a stillness that makes the outside world feel very far away. This is what people mean when they talk about the Murray as a destination rather than just a backdrop. Image credit: Cape Horn Vineyard.

The wines here are distinctive to the region — a Sparkling Durif/Shiraz that's unlike anything you'll taste at a Mornington or Yarra Valley cellar door, alongside Chardonnay and Verdelho grown in the sandy loam soils of the Murray Valley. The cellar door experience is relaxed and unhurried, and the Riverside Bar serves wood-fired pizzas and share platters with the river as your dining companion. Sit outside, order a platter, and let the afternoon take care of itself. It's the kind of lunch that turns into two hours without you noticing.

The ambience by the river here is something special — we'd put it among the most beautiful lunch settings in regional Victoria. On a warm day with the Murray at your feet and a glass of Sparkling Durif in hand, there are very few better places to be.

Getting there: The road to Cape Horn Vineyard is unsealed for the final stretch — there are some current roadworks in the area so allow a little extra time and take it steady. Worth checking conditions with your accommodation before heading out. The drive is part of the adventure.

Insider Tips & Getting There

Getting There: ~200km north of Melbourne. Drive via the Hume Freeway to Shepparton, then the Northern Highway. Allow 2.5 hours. V/Line trains and coaches also serve Echuca from Southern Cross Station.

Best Time to Visit: Winter and autumn are exceptional — open fires, paddlesteamer atmosphere, river red gums and empty streets. Summer is popular but busy; book everything well ahead.

Book the Wharf to Winery Tour First: This is the most popular experience in the region and sells out. Sort it before everything else. Pre-order your winery lunch when you book.

Cape Horn Vineyard: The final road is unsealed with some current roadworks at the time of writing - allow a little extra time. Well worth the detour for the river setting and wood-fired pizzas.

Moama (NSW): Cross the bridge for different dining and bar options. Different state licensing laws mean different opening hours and possibilities - worth exploring.

Don't Miss Bar Lee: Go on a journey through the spirits range. The Indian Gin Flight is the place to start.

FAQs — Echuca Moama Weekend Getaway

How far is Echuca from Melbourne?

Echuca is approximately 200km north of Melbourne - around a 2.5-hour drive via the Hume Freeway and Northern Highway. Doable as a long day trip but best enjoyed as a weekend stay to make the most of the river, the wine country and the dining scene.

What is Echuca Moama known for?

The Port of Echuca - the largest inland port in Australia during the 19th century - and the paddlesteamer culture of the Murray River. Today the town is equally known for excellent wineries, a craft distillery doing genuinely interesting things, a strong café and restaurant scene, and a historic main street that remains one of the best-preserved in regional Victoria.

What are the best restaurants in Echuca?

Embr is the standout - wood-fired pizza and handmade pasta at a level that would compete in Melbourne. Sunago for classic modern Greek with a showstopper platter. Johnny & Lyle's for the best weekend brunch in town. Social Wine Bar for sunset drinks by the Campaspe River. Essen for a Sunday morning breakfast that genuinely impresses.

Is the road to Cape Horn Vineyard easy to navigate?

The final stretch to Cape Horn Vineyard is unsealed, and there are currently some roadworks in the area - so allow a little extra time and take it easy. It's worth checking current conditions with your accommodation before heading out. The drive through the floodplain is part of the experience.

Is Echuca worth a weekend trip from Melbourne?

Without question. Echuca Moama offers something genuinely different to the wine-peninsula and mountain escapes that dominate the Melbourne weekend trip conversation. The river slows you down. The history puts you in contact with something real. And the eating and drinking - the gin distillery, the Campaspe wine bar, the paddlesteamer winery lunch, Embr on Sunday night - is far better than most people expect. It's one of regional Victoria's most rewarding weekends, and still slightly underrated. Not for long.
