Melbourne Tops OpenTable Top 50 Australian Restaurants 2019

With many Australians dining out this month to celebrate the festive season, OpenTable, the world's leading online restaurant reservation platform, has recently revealed their annual Top 50 Restaurants in Australia as determined by diners around the country. Melbourne has claimed its place as the heart of Australia’s food scene for the second year running. How good is that!

The nation’s food capital continues to impress diners with 23 restaurants making the cut. New South Wales secured 12 spots, and Queensland follows with 11 eateries making the Top 50. The OpenTable Top 50 list was based on more than 173,000 restaurant reviews from verified OpenTable diners, covering more than 2,000 Australian restaurants. The growing diversity in cuisine from this year’s list confirms Australia’s appetite for food from around the globe.

For the first time restaurants from this year’s Top 50 list included cuisines from Africa and Chile. Seventeen new eateries have joined the Top 50 list, including Sydney’s pizza bar Bella Brutta and Melbourne’s Asian eatery Supernormal. The surge of new restaurants comprises more than a third (34%) of the combined Top 50, a testament to the eager eyes and stomachs of Australian dinners around the country willing to try new options.

Tim Domelow, Senior Business Development Manager, OpenTable, said: “The 2019 Top 50 Restaurants have shown incredible diversity for both cuisine and price point. Beyond offering Australians an abundance of choice when it comes to dining out, the restaurants that have made this year’s Top 50 have been celebrated for their efforts to create a great dining experience. This includes combining attentive service and delicious meals with impeccably-designed spaces that create an inviting ambience.” “At OpenTable, we take pride in providing a platform for restaurants where they can both manage bookings and act on insights provided by our diners’ reviews,” Domelow commented.

This year also sees European cuisine – including pizza and tapas – top the list as most popular for diners (32%), narrowly beating modern Australian (30%) which held the top spot in 2018. Restaurants with an Asian influence accounted for one fifth (20%) of the Top 50, with remaining categories taking the remaining nine places.
