Wine Review: New De Bortoli Woodfired Heathcote Shiraz 2015

The World Loves Melbourne loves a dark and deep red, and especially from the Heathcote region. De Bortoli, a favourite of ours, has just launched its WOODFIRED Heathcote Shiraz 2015 and its a stunner. Seriously good for washing down chargrilled ribeye De Bortoli Wines WOODFIRED is a dark and brooding Shiraz from Heathcote, Victoria’s home of big reds.

We are a bit over cheap quaffing wines; we want big flavours and elegant finishes like this De Bortoli new release. “Nothing is more perfect than that melt-in-the-mouth moment you experience with a chargrilled dry aged steak, followed by a good glass of red. Creating a red that goes crackingly well with these ‘moments’ is pretty important,” says De Bortoli Wines Chief Winemaker Steve Webber. “Our goal has been to develop a full-bodied, texturally mouth filling red wine that is plump, fruit driven and seriously good for washing down chargrilled ribeye.” Full body it is, with impact across the palate and delightful lingering fruit finish.

We love that a wine has been made with chargrilled ribeye in mind! And we were happy to receive the gourmet pack in the post with Premium Olive Oil, a bottle of the WOODFIRED, a sachet of steak rub and some premium steak sauce.

To craft this gutsy red, De Bortoli selected parcels of fruit from Northern Heathcote’s Chinaman’s Bend, Corop and Colbinabbin areas, where the ancient red Cambrian soils are ideal for dark fruited, plump red Shiraz. “We think we’ve made a cracking wine and it’s not just us who thinks so… even before De Bortoli WOODFIRED was launched it won a gold medal at the 2016 Heathcote Wine Show.”

Making this release even more special is that WOODFIRED is the first De Bortoli wine to feature the family-owned winery’s new brand identity.

So we purchased some high qaulity steaks and then used the meat rub (hour before cooking) and oil to cook the steaks on high temperature in a pan. With the wine it was the perfect combination!  Also to say the meat rub was simple but incredibly good - I want more of this! Steak and wine heaven!
