Best Burgers in Adelaide 2015

During a recent trip to Adelaide The World Loves Melbourne was struck by the burger culture of the City of Churches. A sophisticated gourmet burger culture is in full cry with new burger joints emerging.

Here are our top 5 best burgers in Adelaide -

1. Fancy Burgers

2. Burger Theory

3. A Hereford Beefstouw

4. Grill'd

5. Nordburger

1. Fancy Burgers

We checked out Fancy Burgers in Blackwood and were impressed by the modern fit out of this burger joint, the size and quality of the burgers, and the excellent service with the owner on hand. Buns are so important in the burger economy. We spoke with the owner about how he visited Melbourne where the brioche revolution is in full swing when it comes to burger buns. The burger buns at Fancy Burgers are purposely not sweet brioche burgers but they are fresh and of high quality. Personally I like brioche, but I don't care as long as the buns are top notch and "work". The World Loves Melbourne enjoyed the quality of the meat patty, decent lettuce and cheese, and the overall freshness and balance of the burger. The chips were also top notch, golden and crispy. Overall, Fancy Burgers is great value. I could easily make this joint my regular. Surely among the best burgers in Adelaide. Image credit - The World Loves Melbourne.

2. Burger Theory

In store and on the road with a food truck! Burger Theory is another standout burger joint in Adelaide, with creative burger flavours, attractively desined burger joint and excellent combo deals. The World Loves Melbourne was impressed with the burger of the month - providing innovation and flair in new burger flavours. The patty is crucial to any burger and the thick Angus Beef patty is a winner, juicy and seasoned well. Add fries and a beer for an extra $9, excellent value indeed. Located in the Rundle St precinct this place hums, especially at night. Service was excellent. We enjoy the humour of these guys, their Facebook referring to "house ground" and "hand formed" beef mince patties in their "natural habitat". They use Coorong Angas Beef patties no less, and call their food truck "Pearl". Most would class them among the best burgers in Adelaide. Image credit - The World Loves Melbourne.

3. A Hereford Beefstouw

A Hereford Beefstouw is a high class restaurant in Hutt St that delights with all things meat, including its burgers and sliders. The burgers feature for lunch but also come here in the evening for your premium steak fix - the heritage building looks resplendent with a large balcony. You're struck by the Scandinavian fit out - modern and attractive use of timber, and chic minamalist glory. These sliders sing with brioche bun, wagyu patty, excellent pickles, cheese and lettuce, not to mention mushrooms and a killer truffle majo. Or go the pulled pork.

We spoke to the front of house about the A Hereford Beefstouw story, including how there's one of these steakhouses near Noma (the number one restaurant in the world) - some trivia for your next trip to Scandinavia. Sounds like these guys were suppliers of meat in the Australian market and fell in love with the scene, wanting their own restaurant presence here. Says the website, -

"In 1971, the first A Hereford Beefstouw restaurant was established by the Damgaard family near the town of Herning in central Denmark. Over the last 40 years, A Hereford Beefstouw has grown to become the most well known and respected steak house in Denmark, having sold millions of steaks since its inception.

In 2007, the Damgaard family joined together with Australian farmers Tim and Sarah Burvill to buy a farm near Lucindale in the lower south east of SA, with the purpose of supplying the A Hereford Beefstouw restaurants in Europe with the best Hereford beef. It did not take long for this joint venture, aptly named South Australian Cattle Co., to decide that Adelaide would be the perfect city for the first Australian restaurant. But finding the right location proved to be difficult. The long search was finally over when a beautifully restored 1850′s bluestone building on Hutt Street became available. And so, in September 2011, A Hereford Beefstouw Adelaide opened its doors.

A Hereford Beefstouw has always been famous for its classic Scandinavian design and modern art. The ambience is always modern casual, and the core value of the business has been built around high quality products. From owning our own beef herd, to designing and manufacturing the lights, tables, chairs and knives, you can be assured of our attention to detail. We will guarantee you the best quality Australian beef, cooked to perfection and served in a very special atmosphere.

Now you don’t have to travel to Scandinavia to experience A Hereford Beefstouw – we can be found at 143 Hutt Street, Adelaide, South Australia." Not really street burger style but more high end - still among the best burgers in Adelaide. Image credits: The World Loves Melbourne and A Hereford Beefstouw Facebook.

4. Grill'd

OK so The World Loves Melbourne is a fan of Grill'd, harking back to to when our kids were younger and enjoyed their kids burgers and packs. Their catch cry of healthier burgers delivers and recent additions have included some impressive healthy offerings such as the Field of Dreams. These are decent nouveau burgers. The Mighty Crow-Eater is the complete burger with grilled grass fed lean beef, tasty cheese, crispy trim bacon, free range egg, a couple of slices of beetroot with salad, relish & herbed mayo. The Baa Baa lamb burger and Zen Hen chicken burger are also excellent burgers, not to mention standout chips with herbs and killer aoli options.

Grill’d on The Parade Norwood stocks an exciting alcohol range including local craft beers and ciders – the perfect accompaniment for any of the menu’s 30 fresh, and healthy options including 100% grass fed, hormone free beef and lamb, chicken and vegetarian burgers as well as a range of salads and steak sandwiches. A Melbourne icon but are spreading their wings interstate - we consider among the best burgers in Adelaide.

5. Nordburger

Nordburger is another contender for best burger, located in the burger belt in the eastern suburbs, serving up American style burgers with big flavours. Prices offer amazing value for the quality of burger on offer - the best in Australia? Come here to this small burger joint for the outstanding Nordburger (standard cheeseburger), the hearty Bacon Double with double beef and double cheese, and the Hotburger with jalapenos and chipotle mayo providing some kick. Also check out the crinkle cut fries and hot dogs and iconic shakes such as the FruChoc shake (we find it hard to ever go past salted caramel). No apologies here for the calories, although there are vegan options. The Mushroom Burger has some claims to health we guess, with a large panko-crumbed portobello mushroom a great alternative to a bread bun. A crowd pleaser and definitely among the best burgers in Adelaide. Image credit - Nordburger Facebook.
