We were invited along (David and Zoe) for lunch on a fine autumn day in Bayswater. This is a cafe that locals in Melbourne's East rave about, not to mention those who are happy to drive across town. Melbourne loves a dose of quirk and The Hatter and the Hare delivers in spades.
What is there not to like about an Alice in Wonderland themed cafe of mad dining adventures featuring both savoury and sweet signatures? So much thought and planning has gone into the whole experience, with the cafe also providing top notch customer service. They even have a staff hall of fame. Everything here is quality and presented in the most artistic way.
Choose the Benedictine Adventure or burgers named Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Or order the Chase the White Rabbit featuring Scrambled Eggs and Spicy Bulgogi Pork Belly, with add-on of Kaiserfleisch. Or maybe Off With Their Heads featuring Pumpkin and Corn Fritters, with a serving of halloumi.
For those with a sweet tooth, try the Knave of Heart's Treat featuring Brioche French Toast or A Dormouse's Dream featuring Blackberry Curd Tart.
The cakes are a must order including Vanilla Caramel, Cheshire Cat and the Hatter. Pastry creations are made on-site with great skill.
We understand this cafe was started from the owner's passion for high tea. It explains the attention to detail and high end element to each food category, while bringing approachability to the table.
