Helados Jauja Argentinian Brunch
Helados Jauja in Lygon St serves up impressive Argentinian brunch as well as its awesome ice cream.
With queues along Lygon St even in winter Helados Jauja provides Melbourne with arguably the best ice cream in town. Flavours are interesting and combinations a sweet harmony. But recently the restaurant decided to add Argentinian crepes to its stable. Staff are enthusiastic about their food and culture - I love it when you are proudly presented with a meal and asked to give feedback.
We went along to experience Argentinian brunch and were impressed. Argentinian crepes are served on weekends by Helados Jauja. One is immediately taken with the crepe itself - a little thicker than the usual French crepe. The Panqueque De Trucha of smoked trout with dill and avocado was a hit, featuring generous portions of trout. Simple but effective.
My favourite was the Panqueque De Carne y Queso - a crepe with beef and shaved parmesan cooked in traditional Argentinian style. The beef and mushroom combination works well, with the nice touch of shaved parmesan. The beef component is mince - full of flavour. A rustic hearty meal in the Patagonian style.
Of course one can't resist the side serve of potatoes...
Helados Jauja is a cheery restaurant with bright colours and interesting textures, with basket light shades and wood panel walls. The restaurant is full of Argentinian decorations and pieces such as the framed material above.
Then it was down to my favoutite of the day - the Salted caramel crepes!!! OMG!!! Get yourself along to Helados Jauja for some of their Argentinian salted caramel! Dulce de Leche! I'm a salted caramel tragic from way back - but this creamy version is just so good... And with cream to boot.
Helados Jauja offer the crepes with Banana option - it seriously rocks. Pay a bit more for this or settle on the Salted caramel crepes alone. It's all good!
Get yourself a chocolate fix...
Helados Jauja has simply amazing ice cream with delightful sophistication - check out this chocolate and rasberry combo using fine Belgian chocolate... Some of the ice cream flavours are exotic such as Caramelised pears with walnut or Goats cheese with cranberries and walnuts.
Helados Jauja also serve quality Padre coffee - one of Melbourne's best.
Next time you're thinking of a rustic brunch I recommend Helados Jauja. But I'd visit for those Salted caramel crepes alone! And the ice cream...
