Dinner at Hotel South Melbourne
We enjoyed an excellent dining experience at Hotel South Melbourne, enjoying modern but approachable pub food in the heart of South Melbourne.
Highlights of our dining experience included delicious House Made Focaccia with whipped maple butter, Raw Kingfish with a punchy citrus ponzu, tasty Grilled Port Phillip Bay Scallops, and my favorite Wild Mushrooms with stracciatella (for entrees).
Then we savoured every bite of perfectly cooked Pan Fried Snapper and showstopper Half Roasted Chicken with leeks, miso butter and crispy skin, for mains.
Desserts impressed with delicious Chocolate Mousse and Basque Cheesecake.
All washed down with tasting paddle of Golden Hills Brewery craft beers (their own independent brewery), and Coriole Redstone Shiraz. The top notch craft beers are a point of distinction and my pick are the Blood Plum Sour, the IPA and the Idaho.
Entering a new era of refined dining within slick and spacious interiors, Hotel South Melbourne on Clarendon Street has returned the 1854 build to its original purpose: pouring pints, slinging parmas and other compelling pub dishes, and offering a relaxed, yet sophisticated place to watch the afternoon footy.
Formerly The Market Hotel and prior to that The Star Hotel, this prized corner pub is one of South Melbourne's oldest. Having hosted the likes of AC/DC and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, the venue has undergone several changes of hands over the decades.
Now, new owners Tyson Chambers and Ashleigh Chambers of Melbourne Food and Brew and Golden Hills Brewery (also impressive), have successfully smarted up the venue with a warm palette, exposed brick interiors and an airy open-roof beer garden, restoring the corner spot to its former glory.
With multiple dining options, guests are invited to choose their pub-venture with spaces to suit all occasions, moods and party sizes.
